With numerous illustrations. Leslie Irvin (1895 - 1966) is one of the pioneers of skydiving. He made the first free-fall parachute jump on April 29, 1919, pulling the ripcord to open the parachute himself. Shortly thereafter, Irvin established his own parachute factory in Buffalo, New York, which would become the world's largest manufacturer. The rescue parachute developed by Irvin himself was mainly used in military aircraft. During World War II, Irvin parachutes saved over 10,000 lives.
