Hobhouse and Byron, who were close friends - Hobhouse was the best man at Byron's wedding in 1815 - went on a trip to Italy together in 1816, which Byron discussed in the fourth song of "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" (1818) and which then inspired Hobhouse's "Historical Illustrations" . The copy offered here comes from the possession of the German poet and novelist August Friedrich Ernst Langbein (1757 - 1835) and has his bookplate on the endpaper.
