Masson (auch: Massion), Maximilian: A New Voyage to Italy. With Curious Observations on several Other Countries as Germany, Switzerland, Savoy, Geneva, Flanders and Holland, Vol I, Part I and II (in 2 Volumes).

Auflage

London, J. and J. Bonwick et al., 1739.

The Fifth Edition Edition, with large Additions throughout the Whole, and adorned with feveral new Figures.

Jahrhunderts.

Ausführlich beschrieben werden unter anderem folgende Städte: Rotterdam; Leyden; Amsterdam; Utrecht; Arnheim; Duisburg; Bonn; Andernach; Koblenz; Frankfurt; Mannheim; Heidelberg; Nürnberg; München; Innsbruck; Verona; Padua; Venedig (sehr ausführlich); Neapel; Castellana; Verona; Rom; Florenz; Mailand; Genf; Bern.

With 11 copper engraving illustrations, some of which can be folded out several times. Part II with a detailed subject index and a separate location index in the appendix.

Travel report by the French writer and Councilor of Parliament Maximilian Masson (1650 - 1722). Masson left France after Louis XIV, in the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685, revoked the commandments of tolerance that Henry IV (Henry of Navarre) had granted the Huguenots in the Edict of Nantes in 1598, and turned to England. In 1687 and 1688 he accompanied the brothers James and Charles von Ormond, grandsons of the Duke of Ormond, on their "Grand Tour", a journey through the countries of Central Europe, which is mandatory for sons of the European nobility, which takes travelers through Holland, Flanders, Germany and Switzerland as far as Italy. Masson's description of this journey and its various stations is considered to be one of the most important and illustrative travel books of the 18th century, especially with regard to Italy.

The following cities, among others, are described in detail: Rotterdam; Leyden; Amsterdam; Utrecht; Arnhem; Duisburg; Bonn; Andernach; Koblenz; Frankfurt; Mannheim; Heidelberg; Nuremberg; Munich; Innsbruck; Verona; Padua; Venice (very detailed); Naples; Castellana; Verona; Rome; Florence; Milan; Geneva; Bern.

Exemplar

LII, 348 S.; S. 349 – 712. (Newer) half-leather bindings with gold-embossed spine titles and gold-embossed ornamentation; Book cover with multi-colored marble covers; three-sided red cut.

The high-quality hand bindings, which were made in the old English bookbinding tradition based on historical models, the spine of the book was slightly lightened, otherwise in perfect fresh condition; Pages slightly browned in places; Title page of the first volume with slight marginal lesions; some sheets of this volume with slight edge damage; one sheet of the second volume with a corner tear (without loss of text). All in all very nice copy of this very rare, otherwise no longer found early travel description.
